Ali Millican

I’m Ali Millican and the founder of Nurture Parents. I live with my husband and our elderly dog. We have three grown-up children. I’m a qualified social worker and counsellor, and have worked with parents for many years. I became aware, as a student midwife, that the NHS was often unable to meet the needs of parents due to lack of time or limited resources. I set up Nurture Parents with the aim of offering parents more time, information and support during pregnancy and the early years of parenthood.I’m aqualified doula and Hypnobirthing Instructor. I love helping parents to recognise their strengths, reconnect with their intuition and understand how their bodies are designed to birth their babies. I spend most of my time building Nurture Parents. When I’m not doing that, I can be found on one of our glorious beaches walking my dog.

Irene Duncan

I’m Irene Duncan live with my long-suffering husband! I have two sons in their twenties, two step-sons in their forties and a wonderful baby granddaughter who will be a year old in June.My background is in journalism. I started work at publishers DC Thomson as an editorial assistant and worked my way up the career ladder, ultimately becoming Head of Publishing for the magazines and comics. One of my happiest times was launching two parenting magazines –First Steps and Babycare and Pregnancy. My sons were very young at the time so the content was very close to my heart. My focus is now on my voluntary work. I’m very proud to be Chair of Nurture Parents. Having been through all the stages of raising children, I totally understand the challenges of parenthood. I’ve managed to survive and feel I can share my experience of motherhood to help others. I’m a volunteer with The Prince’s Trust and work with amazing young people. In my spare time I enjoy going to concerts, the cinema, cooking, eating out, shopping and dog-sitting for my friends

I’m also a breastfeeding peer supporter.I’m currently training to be a reflexologist, as well as running my own small business making cloth menstrual pads. I’m never happy unless I have at least five projects on the go at once!I have an academic background in Women’s History and as much as I enjoy academic debate, my real love is supporting women on the ground. I firmly believe that community is key in helping to support parents and my aim is to enable this through my work with Nurture Parents.

Ali Roberts

I’m Ali Roberts. I live with my partner and two young children and work as a research scientist.I’m a trained breastfeeding peer supporter with experience in listening skills and a qualified babywearing supporter –I run the Dundee Sling Library. I also teach a community singing group. The birth of a mother occurs simultaneously with the birth of the first baby she delivers; it’s a tough learning curve for everyone involved which can be immensely improved by education and informed support.I am passionate about improving maternal mental health and a keenadvocate of attachment parenting styles.I believe in Nurture Parents because it strives to empower parents through open discussion, provision of evidence-based information and skill-sharing to allow parents to grow and support their own families.

Michelle Macaskill

I’m Michelle Macaskill and I’m mumof Jaxon. He’s two years old and keeps me and my partner on our toes! I love being a mum, but I didn’t always feel so happy. After Jaxon was born, I suffered horrendous post-natal depression, but wasn’t considered bad enough to be referred for treatment. I felt I had nowhere to go for support. I’d tried going to various mum and baby groups but didn’t feel welcome. I came across Nurture Parents on Facebook and decided to have one last try at meeting other mums. I’m so glad I did. Nurture Parents has been a lifeline. From the minute I got there everyone was chatty and friendly. It was such a relief to be able to share my worries and concerns without being judged.I want to share my experience of parenthood with other mums and let them know that if they’restruggling, they’ll always find support at Nurture Parents. I always look forward to coming to the group. Nurture Parents has turned my life around and can make such a difference for new parents.
